What is the right attitude towards yourself?

Postby Rob83 » Thu Feb 10, 2011 6:32 pm

First time I've ever tried this type of open forum advice about myself, so please forgive me if I'm directing this question to the wrong area of the forum or ramble a bit.

In my situation, I was once-upon-a-time the target for abuse/bullying and my job is sales via telephone with the public at large. Needless to say, I'm still the target of some disrespectful, abusive acts & feel the consequences of long-term exposure to A-type-gone-wrong folks. In many ways, I see clearly how those early events have shaped the man I've become.

This question is going to sound strange, but after reading many great articles, attending professional counseling, and years of personal soul-searching, I'm still in the dark about my ultimate goal: How should I feel about myself that would be the right, correct way?

I understand that how my interpretation of events in my life and the learned victim paradigm with which I view the events in my life colors my perception, but I am lost when it comes to what an appropriate view would be. How should I interpret the actions of others if not to think they are making these comments because of some detail they've picked up on; why would they select these things to say if there is not some truth behind them? It's easy to say "I deserve respect because I am a living creature", but when society and many people disagree, how do you counter their argument; in their minds, they can take what they want, be it your wealth, health, or dignity. Sadly, in a lot of cases, they seem to be right. What's to stop them?

If it helps, the issues I deal with are anxiety (especially in social situations), depression, and social withdrawl.

Thanks in advance for replies! Have a good day.

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forums, hope your reading has helped in some manner.

There are no professionals here, so we can't really say how you should feel. Only can say what I feel. Being yourself, doing what is right for you and not giving up is the way I try to handle things. Life deals us some hands that is hard to deal with, but someway we do.

Continue getting professional help, don't be afraid of doing that.

Sorry I can't give you answers, hard to find answers for myself at times, just keep trying.

Hope to see your posting more and there is a chat room connected with this site. Go talk in there, lots of good and caring chatters.
