is it possible?

Postby beautifulgrrl » Thu Sep 09, 2010 6:35 pm

I was wondering, is it possible to get over your depression without counseling or medication? I dont really want to be on anti-depressants for the rest of my life. I dont like the idea of only feeling "normal" when I take a pill...I know this sounds very strange but I was wondering how you all deal with it? Is there a light at the end of the tunnel

Heya! Well... I think there's light at the end of the tunnel. It is some journey!

There are a lot of tidbits on the forum, so make sure to look around!

One of the 1st things I will be quick to say now is to check with a doctor (general physician or so) to make sure nothing is physically wrong.

These are just some of my thoughts in a nutshell.

If you've gone to a doctor & nothing seems to be wrong, then there are other things, such as:

1. How are you eating? What's your diet like? If there aren't enough veggies + fruits, I would start trying to get more in.

2. Are you drinking enough water? If not, do so; try to get more in your day.

3. Reflect. Is something bothering you? What's wrong exactly? What's going on in your life? If you know what it is, it may be good to write it out briefly & then ask yourself: Now, how can I fix/solve it/make it less bothersome to me?

4. How is your hygiene? Have you been taking care of yourself well enough? If not, then take little steps to improve.

5. Have you been getting enough of your vitamins & minerals?

6. Exercise. Are you able to do any?

7. Environment. Is it cluttered? Try to lighten it up/organize it better for you.

8. Friends/People you can trust (if you are lucky to have this)

9. Are there any dis-eases that run in your family? How are you in terms of NOT getting them?

10. If you are not focusing enough on yourself, make more time for yourself. (e.g. don't run yourself ragged with doing things for others)

There are a lot of things to consider, but this may give you a start as to what you may want to check.

I hope I answered your question. If not, let me know.

Hi. It is possible sometimes, but so much harder than it has to be. Meds are a tool. There for us to use. Nothing wrong with getting help from the sources that are out there.

Indeed, medicine is okay. Just make sure to check that nothing else is wrong.

In my case, I had several things that were wrong with me physically that I had to sort out first. Most of the doctors I went to were not able to help me the way that I needed help. If something is wrong, jot it down & see how it can be fixed.

The major things that helped me get to a point of being more okay that I've been in a while were water, change in diet (due to finding out about an allergy I didn't know I had previously), vitamins + minerals, dealing with an excess in harmful bacteria (that I didn't know I had), getting medical attention for a heart problem I didn't know I had, & making sure I "regular".

Eating on time & eating enough has also been helping.

This was my case. Other things were to purge my environment of toxic people, memories, things, etc. It was also a matter of getting through some things that happened to me that I did not deal with back then.

It will be a journey, but if you can give it some effort, I am hoping you will find some relief. :)

If you do not want pills or counseling there is lots of other things you can do. First, it would probably be taking personal responsibility for yourself. Like Crystalgaze said- there are lots of things to consider. Exercise, healthy eating, meditating, family, vitamins, etc... Find out what works for you. Promoting your own recovery is the best thing you can do.

What I do for my depression is several things:
I do relaxation exercises, meditation, and listen to positive music everyday. That helps me keep focused and concentrated on everything.
Some other things I do are- exercise at least 30min a day, eat healthy, have a schedule, make a fun list of things I can do(hobbies etc.), blog/journal, have supporters, work on goals.

It is not impossible. :)

That is a hard question to answer, for we aren't alike when it comes to our illness' and how we do on meds.

Feel that you have to learn to put trust into your doctor (s), do all you can to make things better for yourself. Share you feelings with them. And vent.

That is where we come in. We vent, we give support, we go on. Not an easy thing, dealing with depression, but we do learn what we need to do, and try our best.

Not the answer you were looking for, but the best I can give.

Warmie
