IVE BECOME ADDICTED TO CODEINE

Postby xn728 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:01 pm

Hello all my dear freinds ive popped in to let you know im ok ,still a little poorly ,the new meds for my deppression seem to be making me feel a little better mentally ,but my other medication i take for other things has caused me a few unexpected problems , ive become addicted to codiene ,it is in the drugs i take for my arthritic pain ,,it has made my stomach lining bleed and my ulcers are very painful ,,,it creeps up on you without knowing i would take 6 a day ,,that was ok ,,then 8 per day the max ,,allowed ,but i felt that i needed more ,,i found myself having 10 a day ,,when i kept putting in reapeat prescriptions the doc had me in and ,ask me about how many i was taking ,,he said i was taking enough to knock an elephant out ,,he told me how it can depress my breathing and in some cases kill you ,,large dose,s of course ,,but still very scary ,,i have to withdraw it slowly ,but the side effects are quite bad ,,its hard to sit still i have pain in my joints ,,and of course the trouble its causeing in my already broken tummy ,so this is why im a little quiet ,,ill be better soon i hope i feel like posting ,,i do follow the forum ,but dont feel well enough to post much just now

Codeine is a well known prescription drug that is commonly known as Tylenol 3 in North America. Codeine falls into the category of opiates and is turned into morphine by the body in order to be utilized properly. Codeine is derived from the opium poppy and is related to morphine and heroin. The purpose of Codeine is to relieve pain and anxiety. This drug, like other opiates, not only has the potential to depress breathing but can depress other body systems as well.

Side effects of codeine include:

• dry mouth
• itching
• drowsiness
• constipation
• nausea and vomiting
• orthostatic hypotension
• urinary retention

Like any other drug, tolerance can result after consistent use of medication, this includes therapeutic effects. How quickly this occurs depends on the metabolism of the individual. In addition, the different side effects tolerance may develop at different rates. As with other opiates, a serious probable adverse reaction is respiratory depression. This side effect is related to dose related and can be fatal. Another very common side effect decreased libido (lack of sexual drive). Codeine is known to interact negatively with certain psychiatric medications, so prior to administration it is advisable to check with a physician. It is possible to have an allergic reaction to codeine, which has been known to cause swelling of skin and rashes.

((((Ken))))

The last post I read from you said you were taking a break from the forums and we all need breaks here and there. You are in a situation that happens all the time and to many people. Me included. I've been taking an opiate for a few years now and have run short on my meds. It is not a good feeling at all! Aside from slowly weaning off the meds there is no easy way but what helps tremendously is to keep busy and distracted. The one I take (oxycontin) has a horrible, horrible withdrawl and I looked on one of the medical websites to see if there were remedies to ease it a bit. They have over-the-counter and herbal mixtures that help so maybe you could check for codeine and see if there is something for that.

My hand and shoulder will always be here if you need it, brother. Our families are what mean the most.

Wishing everything good,
Misty

((((((((((((((((((((( Ken )))))))))))))))))

Talk with your doctor/physician. There are medication that can replace the codeine. It can turn into your worst enemy, have seen that happen. Please stay safe and do all you can to make that happen.

In my thoughts

((((((((((ken))))))))) it happens a lot medicine we take for necessity to alleviate a problem and then become addicted...for me I once self-medicated with booze, and am an alcoholic, I suffer severe physical pain but cannot risk narcotics because I like them too much and would quickly become addicted and abuse them...

Please google Narcotics Anonymous, as there are many people like you who become addicted to prescription drugs and can offer support in coming off them and in sharing how they deal with pain when they can no longer take the medicine...all I know is, from my 12 step program, I got more help and healing than I ever did from the mental health profession...

Can you get celebrex in England? It is non-narcotic and I know it used to help me a LOT when I took it...unfortunately, it is too expensive for me now, so I rely on ibuprophen and lotsa hot baths and topicals.

Will pray for you my brother during this difficult time. I care about you, and we are here for you if you need to talk and until you feel up to posting regularly again, know I am thinking of you...

Good to hear the doctor was on top of things and you are getting it into control.

Keep posting, we don't tell people 'shut my clakker '. LOL if that happened, I would be in trouble.

Take care.......
