How My Dog Helped Me Through Difficult Days

Postby DavidPerez » Fri Aug 21, 2026 2:35 am

There was a time when depression made even simple parts of my routine feel difficult. My dog became one of the few things that consistently gave my day some structure.

Taking him outside, feeding him, and simply having him nearby gave me small reasons to stay engaged when I didn’t feel like doing much. I started wondering whether that kind of emotional support could be relevant to an ESA.

Learning about ESA letters helped me understand that having a pet you love isn’t automatically the same as having an emotional support animal. There needs to be a legitimate mental health-related need and an evaluation by a licensed mental health professional.

My ESA Therapist was one resource I looked at while learning about the evaluation process. What mattered most to me was understanding that an ESA letter should be based on a proper professional assessment rather than simply being purchased as a certificate.

For me, my dog was already an important source of comfort. Learning about the ESA process simply helped me understand the difference between emotional support and formal ESA documentation.
