Hoping to find like minds who understand

Postby jaxwoot » Thu Jan 21, 2016 4:07 am

Hi all,

I'm new here, and am really hoping to meet some like minds on here who understand what I go through with depression and anxiety. I am very lucky to have had my dad to get me through everything - he fully understood me and my depressive thoughts and knew exactly what to say as he'd been through it before!! I lost him 2 years ago, and have really been struggling with the depression and anxiety since then. Although I have great friends and an amazing boyfriend, none of them have really been through it, so they will listen but they just don't quite understand.

I have just lost my grandma as well who I was very close to, so the grief is hitting me hard now.

I'm a female turning 27.

Would be great to find some friends on here who get what I'm going through, and hoping I will be able to lend an ear and a shoulder as well.

Can't wait to meet you all.

Hi Jaxwoot,

51 year old dude here. I am being treated for both depression and OCD - which manifests often/mostly as anxiety over ruminating thoughts.

It's taken me a long while to figure out how circumstances and events feed my anxiety and most importantly recognizing that. Its an ongoing practice: re-setting my thinking pathways so that events don't needlessly feed my anxiety. Interestingly Zen Buddhism literature talks a lot about "re-setting" the mind's pathways.

I hope you're day is going well.

Birthday?

Are you having a birthday soon? I read that you're turning 27. Mine's coming up next Monday. I'll be 25.

Hope you can enjoy it, despite the depression. Don't forget to treat yourself.

Welcome to the forums.

Hi Jaxwoot! Im new on here too and came on for exactly the same reasons. I'm a 26 year old male who has been suffering with depression and anxiety for a few years now. My closest support I have are my dad and girlfriend and although they try and are supportive they just don't really understand what it's like. I joined up to meet like minded people and it's nice to know I'm not alone :)

Thanks everyone! Nice to meet you all :)

Nenkohai - great to know that I'm not alone in the rumination. It can be about anything and everything.. Sometimes it's so tiring, I just want to have a day where I don't worry needlessly about something stupid! Especially I'm always wondering if I've said or done something wrong which is so frustrating. I really want to learn to trust and love myself more!

Zen Buddhism sounds really interesting. I will have to look into that. Thanks so much :)

Hey Specter :)

Yep! My birthday is on Saturday, looking forward to going out for a nice dinner. What are you going to do?

I'm sure I will enjoy it, just a quiet dinner with family and the bf. Thanks for the reminder. You're so right.. with the grief I have really been trying to push it down rather than facing the problem, but that's why I'm here to start trying to face it and get more info. What's your story with depression? Where are you at?

Hope you enjoy your birthday too.

Hey Polo,

Oh cool, nice to meet you! Yeah I know exactly what you mean, it can be tough when they don't understand.. it's still comfort to talk about it but not quite the same as when you talk to someone who really gets what you're going through. Feel free to chat to me any time and I hope you find what you're looking for on here.
