Don't Let Anyone Fool You...

Postby crystalgaze » Fri Mar 19, 2010 2:50 am

Perfectionism is a GOOD THING. If anyone tells you that something is wrong with you because you are a perfectionist, that person is DEAD WRONG.

Why? Well, it's simple: Miss a payment or two on a car, house, loan, credit card, etc. (especially in these times) & see how it affects your credit....

Make an error or two at work & see what happens.... (especially if it's anything in finance)

The world requires perfection, as absurd as that is. Don't let anyone fool you.

The world may require perfection in some cases, but I can no longer put such high expectations on myself, or I will always fall short and be disappointed. There's saying "progress, not perfection." I've had to learn to forgive myself for not being perfect, and try to extend the same forgiveness to others for imperfections when I can (and I can't always forgive). If I had to do everything perfectly, I would likely do absolutely nothing.

There are two things I did perfectly in the last 24 hours: I didn't pick up alcohol and I did not kill myself...other than that, the day was pretty much a mess with about the only things I accomplished were getting together two bags of trash, responding to an email (have been neglecting my email) and trying to support a few on this site. But you know what? That's okay. Somedays I can do more. Somedays I cannot. Perfectionism leads to serious disappointment often...maybe some parts of the world demand it, but I can no longer put that much pressure on myself.

Maybe limit the areas of perfectionism is the key...focus on what really has to be done perfectly and do one's best, but let some of the little stuff go...forgive ourselves, learn what we can, and grow...progress, not perfection.

Anyway, that's my two cents for what its worth! (((((((((((crystal)))))))))))

I agree: The world demanding perfectionism is ABSURD, but that is the way it is--unfortunately.

I don't stress myself out about not being perfect; really, I'm annoyed with how things are in the world.

It's been said so many times that humans are flawed, but yet the world requires perfection. It's ridiculous.

Me: " My name is TackingIntoTheWind, and I'm a perfectionist. "

Everyone else at the meeting: " Hello, TackingIntoTheWind. "

But seriously though folks....

I'm working hard to curb my perfectionism, that I have to admit I view as a mixed blessing. It's good to have a conscientious approach to whatever we do. However, too much of anything, even perfectionism, is not automatically a good thing in my view.
The world may demand perfectionism, but what the world demands may not be fair, feasible or even necessarily sane!
And, even if perfection could be achieved, would it truly be desirable? :( If someone or something would were to be perfect, it would, by definition, have no capacity for growth or change. Being perfect it would have neither scope or need to be any more than it was. Isn't there something of sterility about the idea of perfection. If to be perfect is to come to the end of all possibilities and alternatives, this hardly seem desirable, more an ending to be feared?
( PS. Although, I am of course Welsh, and to be Welsh is better than perfect!  )

Well there it is! Why I don't belong on this earth. Perfection or being a Perfectionism, isn't me :(

Couldn't even if I tried. :)

(((((((((Warmie)))))))))) you may not be perfect, but we love you just the way you are. I too feel I don't belong in this world, and don't want to be a part of it, but feel a sense of belonging on this site. There are some things you do perfectly...bring a smile to our face with the jokes in your corner, post intriguing or thought-provoking or helpful advice or touching material in your corner, and provide caring support on the threads here, as well as providing an important service as moderator, keeping this a safe, secure environment where we can share and connect in our suffering. :)

For all the kind words, thank you. Wish I could see myself as you describe me, but for the life of me I just can't. Guess the hurt, the depression, the untruths of my past blocks a lot.

I believe this forum is a good place, a caring place, with people that do care, it just isn't words type on a screen. You are part of that Shattered, don't ever forget that.

For all you do for others, for me, thank you!

Warmie
