Dificulties with comunication

I grew up with a father who was very "hands-off" and almost neglectful when it came to my upbringing. My parental care and world knowledge came primarily from my school friends and other kids. I also have inherited some sort of weakness in my language abilities as well. These factors together resulted in my word choices being so poor that when my mother took me in we had an argument because I was labeled a bush a tree. Realizing I was just using the wrong word but my statement was accurate, my mother to this day works with me to ascertain my understanding of definitions so I can better socialize with others.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has had or has a similar language/speaking challenge?
