Which N flowers grow best in full sun? Considering nasturtium and nigella for my balcony

Postby roberttaker » Thu Oct 15, 2026 3:49 am

I'm planning to grow flowers that start with N on my sunny balcony, but I'm unsure whether nasturtium or nigella would do better in direct sunlight.

- Sunlight: Which flower handles full sun better?
- Container Growing: Which grows well in balcony pots?
- Blooming: Which offers longer-lasting flowers?

If you're looking for flowers that start with n that grow well in full sun, both nasturtium and nigella are excellent choices for a sunny balcony. However, their growing needs are slightly different.

Nasturtium thrives in full sun, ideally receiving 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. It grows well in containers, produces bright orange, yellow, or red flowers, and can bloom for months in mild weather. However, intense summer heat may slow flowering.

Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist) also prefers full sun but performs best in cooler temperatures. Its delicate blue, white, or pink flowers look beautiful in balcony planters. It needs well-drained soil and generally blooms for a shorter period.

My recommendation: Choose nasturtium if you want colorful flowers over a longer season. Pick nigella for its unusual blooms and feathery foliage. For a balcony with extremely hot afternoon sun, provide some afternoon shade to both plants.
