Dreams
Lay thee down upon a dream –
To Heaven and Hell, and in between
Each breath, comingled with the void,
Conscience, to itself destroyed;
But, born again upon the night
In phantasmagoric light –
A rumor of the life above;
Angels even know not of
The ecstasy, but of the terror
Devils could not so endeavor
To inflict, and supply
The never-ending agony;
But with a rush and gasp
Worlds dissolve beyond all grasp
Of memory, and in its space –
Thoughts of morning full replace.
