Treasures

I open up my memories.
Neglected hinges squeal their protest.
I brush years of dust away
and let my thoughts travel back.
I can feel the smiles.
I see the faces of friends long gone.
I hear the laughter.
I taste the tears.
This journey is nothing new to me.
The road is full of lessons learned,
love captured-and lost,
special friends come and gone,
but no regrets.
The contents of this box
have made me who I am,
but the box is not me.
The box is yesterday.
I am today.
So I carefully close the lid,
rejoicing in how far I've come.
I have a new road to travel now
and the light of possibility is blinding.
