Goodness Gracious....

Postby crystalgaze » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:50 pm

Feel free to put a post about something shocking to you or whatever.

My goodness gracious moment is the current state of things right now.

Hurricane Earl is passing us.... & then, Tropical Storm Fiona has formed!! Cheese and bread! Fiona is low on the map, so I'm thinking it will be a direct hit. The bad news is that she has time to strengthen and the earth is already soaked from the rain we've already gotten.

I was sweeping water off of the porch today. The rags in front of the door are soaked. I was wondering to myself where to hang them out to dry....

It's pretty interesting this time. We have power. WAPA has done a great job!(WAPA = Water and Power Authority) It did come and go, but it's been on for the most part. This morning, it didn't look so good; power went out & then even when it did come back on, cable was off, so there was no weather forecast to see.

Maybe I have oversimplified things, but to me, it's just some wind and rain. No sweat at all. (There wasn't much lightning and thunder, at least where I was.)

WAPA has shown improvement. Shoot with just some wind and rain, I'm glad it's on for how we're taxed! (Most of the time, we won't have power, but the people across the street would.) Of course, not every place has power. I'm also very pleased with my ISP. Go Broadband VI! Thank heavens for the Internet! I'm able to know what's going on with the weather. Wireless does not work, but I'm all good once I plugin the ethernet cord. The cell phone is "looking for service". The regular phone (landline) is dead or rather the line is open.

I also LOVE my battery backup!! (APC Back-UPS ES 750) My other one doesn't come back on once I take it off.... (APC Back-UPS XS 900) I'm hoping nothing's wrong with the 900.

(I know I could put on a radio or whatever, but it's nice to be able to put my gadgets to use in an emergency. )

I was amazed that people were on the road, almost all day today! I was just like, "WOW...."

It's not too bad.... I don't think....

So you live somewhere in the North East? Stay safe and keep alert!

What is shocking to me is, the terrible heat we have been getting. It usually gets hot in NC, but not highs in the 90s every day! Plus, the humidity is unbearable.

Hey Jaymn! :) Please pay attention to the news! From everything I've heard, Earl is supposed to be headed for the East Coast!! Also, I live in the US Virgin Islands next to Puerto Rico.

I'm not sure how well I'm coping with this storm business....

Of all the things I could be doing in the middle of hurricane type weather, I was disassembling this tablet computer I worked on maybe about a month ago. I didn't just dismantle it once.... I took it apart TWICE.... (once to check if it still powered on because one of the pieces was in the wrong place from when I took it apart previously; twice to check the part # of the display because I think I might have damaged it, which might be a $30 repair)

I did boil some eggs before the power went out yesterday, but I boiled them too long, which is something I've never done in my life.... They're way too hard and utterly unenjoyable.... (D'oh!)

Since power was on last night, I put lavender & vetiver on an aromastone & slept like a baby. I was SO KO-ed.... (No need for valium)

The laundromat is way too packed to do laundry, so I will try for tomorrow early early early in the morning....

Of all the things I could be doing today, I will probably finally hook up other electronic gadgets I had been meaning to hook up for some time now. I think in all honesty, my nerves are shot, but I have to hang in there!

There will probably be another system after Fiona.... & that's also super low on the map.... There is good cause for concern.

I do pay attention to the news. I live at the tip of Western North Carolina so it won't affect us much. Knock on wood...
We have another 90F day...

 No, I didn't mean it like that--like you actually don't pay attention.... I meant more of like sometimes the media/people downplay things and misleads the public.

It looks like most of everyone was spared.... :)

Well.... I am not sure what to think.....

Here, it appears this tax for light & water here has tripled for some people at least. This is a goodness gracious moment. One of the main reasons the company came up with the tax was due to the government not paying its light & water bill.

The other moment is something that seems to be becoming widespread here & it's loitering + soliciting inside/outside of businesses--from KFC to McDonald's to the grocery store. What I don't understand is why those places won't do anything about it, by involving the police & so on.

My people went to McDonald's some time ago, & there was a woman INSIDE of McDonald's begging for/demanding money from the people standing on line waiting to order. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANY SUCH THING IN MY LIFE. Most businesses don't stand for that sort of thing. & here how much the woman asked for.... $20 & then tried to intimidate the person she asked.

What's worse about the woman is that she is NOT even from here (& as a result could careless about the place)! (Don't get me wrong; it's bad whether the person being problematic is from here or elsewhere.) She from some other island. I have nothing against people & where they are from, but to come in somebody else's land & do schupidness is just annoying. But you know, I guess it's that the business/people/government are not doing enough......

What an absolute..... especially since in that particular McDonald's case, the police station is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER FROM IT. Absolute  & the workers in the place said about how they call the police, but that the officers don't come. BALONEY!

The person doing the soliciting inside of McDonald's was a countryman/countrywoman of AT LEAST one of the workers in there (because they were speaking their patois together). Why these folks don't just return home is beyond me, especially since they seem to feel that their home is SO much better than here. (Yeah because they're taking US $ & sending it "back home"....)
