Coping at Work

Postby ktun » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:15 pm

Hi, I'm new here and looking for advice from anyone who has had to cope with major depression at work. My father has cancer and my father in law died a few months ago. Since then my husband has been very depressed and an emotionally and financially costly battle has ensued over his father's estate. I've been really struggling to keep my emotions under control at work since June. This morning my manager pulled me aside and said basically that she needs employees who are fully functional and that I need to decide if I can pull myself together enough to continue working there. She said it is like I'm not even there anymore, I do my job, but not fast enough for her and I'm making mistakes that I never used to make. I have been at home the rest of the day trying to figure out how to go back into work tomorrow and how to cope there and be more "functional". I thought I was doing okay and didn't think I was getting any less work done than anyone else. I can't afford to lose my job as my husband isn't working, but don't know how to pull myself together to cope better. I am on anti depressants but cannot afford to see a therapist as my health insurance doesn't cover it.

Anyone else had problems at work or can offer advice on how to cope and not lose the job?

Thank you.

Hi kitun... welcome!

Your employer does not sound very empathetic! My goodness - everyone goes through tough times, right? Try not to be too hard on yourself, ok?

I know being at work when there are so many other things to worry about it trying... I've been there. I guess you just have to try to remember how important it is to keep your job. I'm sure you have not done anything that warrants you being terminated.

There are some wonderful mental health clinics that cater to people without insurance coverage. Many allow you to pay on a sliding scale. Have you ever looked into those? Therapy can be a very helpful tool. A third party can give you insight into your situation.

Another thing is... this web site has a wonderful chat room connected to it. It's a great and supportive place where people can advise or just listen if that's what you need. I definitely suggest you checking it out!

Again... welcome!!! (((((ktun))))

ktun - any news? How's it going at work? Just thinking about you and your situation, and hoping that you are ok...
