Worried about Job Offer.

Postby Martyn » Fri Nov 29, 2013 2:03 pm

Hi,

I'm new so please no snide remarks or bullying - my problem is real.

I am unemployed and I am working closely with a company which finds me work. They've found a job for me. However, I am not exactly over the moon about it. I have an interview for a position in a factory, possibly 12 shifts. It is nights.

But I have difficulty sleeping through the day. Not only am I a light sleeper but the traffic from the road right near my room is very loud, even with ear pluggs and industrial headphones I can hear everything including my housemates (they are unemployed and are very lousy with the music - and the walls are paper thin) and cannot sleep. At night it is peaceful and quiet and sleeping is not usually a problem.

If this job was through the day I would not be here posting this. I did two night shifts years ago in a hotel and did not sleep or eat, and it took me a full week to recover from it. I can remember being very stressed.

Additionally, some jobs are boring and I can become suicidal as a result. The last job I had was on a production line , 12 hour shifts, working alone, with only 1 half hour break. By shift two I was feeling so low I was playing how to kill myself. I told my doctor and he said I should not work there anymore. So I asked the company to lay me off. They agreed.

But I'm also worried about turning down a job offer...the job centre.

I just don't know what to do.

Hi Martyn,

I believe you have already made up your kind that this job is not for you due to the time schedule. Night shifts can be hard to adapt to but if you are in need of money and have bills to pay then now is not the time to be picky. If you're not desperate for the job, still turn up for the interview anyway. You have nothing to lose, even if you're at one job you can always keep an eye out for others jobs which may be suitable for you.

You say boring jobs can make you feel suicidal. What kind of jobs would you like that would keep you excited? Why not apply for jobs that suit your interests?

I hope things work out for you, don't worry too much x
