Distorted Shyness

I am 74 years old and I believe that I am now well adjusted, but as a teenager, and even well before that, I had developed a massive inferiority complex. I had buck teeth and big ears, both of which were corrected sometime ago. I also was 6 foot 2 and skinny as a rail.

To put it bluntly, the girls used to line up to see which one of them could get the furthest away from me. Well, I suppose that really didn’t happen but it might as well have, as far as I was concerned.

As a young boy, I was extremely shy; my parents were not rich and were not socially active. Once in a while they would entertain friends from the church where they attended regularly.

On one of those occasions, I came in the front door of our home and was introduced to these new people and felt extremely uncomfortable. From then on when I came home during the evening, I would first peek inside the windows of the front room of our home.

If my parents had visitors, I would go back down to the park and play for another hour before coming back home, in the hope that the guests had left by then. I sure could have used some psychological help to overcome my distorted shyness.

If anybody reading these words has had similar experiences to this, why not tell us all about it and maybe the people on this site can help you overcome such fears sooner than it took me to correct mine.
