Ken~
I've dealt with, and tamed vicious cats before, since I've never been without a cat. And one thing I find works, though it takes a long time, is to not try to handle them or pet them when they don't want it. Just let them bask in your warmth. Sometimes it takes a bit of food to get them close to you, but then don't try for anything else. Just sit there and they will sit there too, waiting for more food, then perhaps strart very timidly getting on your lap or whatever, but when they do this, DON'T try to handle them. Just let them near, hold off on the food for a minute longer, then eventually, you will be able to touch his head. Just once. Let him smell you first, even thought you've been sitting there for half an hour, a hand coming at their head is a lot different than a hand coming with food. They don't recognize it's connected to the same person. Then walk away. All he needs to learn is that you are no threat, that when you show up in his garden, something good and non-threatening is going to happen. I would expect you to be able to pet him in no less than 6 months. It takes ten times as long to un-learn something as to learn it. He learned really quickly that humans are the absolute enemy. Just be with him, but don't touch him. His own garden where you visit is a VERY good idea. Is the garden big enough for you to sit on the ground or a low chair with him? The closer you are to the ground and the smaller you look, and less threatening, ie. stoop as you walk - try to look small with your tail between your legs, will scare him much less than a big human coming at him fast.
It takes time. But you of all people Ken, can do this. Plus it will give your Visitor a forced leave of absence. He is not allowed in that garden. Only you and Billy.
Good luck and patience,
a5
