Bronte. ( Although, I'd be the first to admit that I've never actually read Jane Eyre...Not enough, superheroes, space-battles, car-chases or private detectives... 
)
Still, perhaps there might be possibilities in updating the story...?
Jane walked sedately up the flights of stairs from the main entrance hall of the house to her own room on the topmost floor. She was still slightly overwhelmed by the sheer size of Mr Rochester's house. She reached the door to her room, walked in, and sank gratefully into the rather worn , but comfortable chair by her window.
Suddenly, a Dalek scout-ship appeared, flew over the house with a massive sonic boom, and landed over the darkened midnight horizon! Tired as she was, Jane responded at once. She produced the green lantern given to her by the Guardians of the Universe, and holding her power ring to the lantern, recharged it by reciting the Green Lantern oath:
" In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight, let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light! "
Pausing only to transform her garb from that of quiet, demure governess, to the green and black uniform of her superhero alter ego, she flew out of the open window. She was confident that she could gather her fellow members of the Justice League of America together, and they could then vanquish the Dalek invaders...Hopefully quite quickly, because she would have to be up at 5:00 o'clock the following morning to get all the household tasks started before Mr. Rochester woke up, and left for his private eye offices in the nearby village.
