Hiya
I'm new to this and hope someone can help.
I've been on Effexor 300mg a day (150mg morning and night) for 15 months and it's really helped me. Unfortunately there is now a manufacturing shortage in my area and the 'work around' is to prescribe Effexor XR instead.
I'm really worried the change is going to cause all sorts of problems. Has anyone else experienced going from Effexor to Effexor XR and if so, how did you get on?
Thanks
Lexx

Hi
If you're in the UK, you'll find it's called Effexor XL. I've been taking the XL version for many years, having switched from the 'normal' version. I didn't find any problems making the switch as it's the same drug that's just in a slow-dissolving coating.
What I have found is that I'm sensitive to the formulations provided by different manufacturers. If I change from one generic to a different one then I go through withdrawal for several weeks before the new variant takes effect. For that reason, I'm always prescribed Effexor XL rather than a generic. I've had no problems with XL as far as I know.
Last year I talked to a pharmacist who advised that I took all my XL in the morning - I'm on 375mg. I was having problems with my sleeping pattern and the pharmacist advised taking the XL in the morning so that the XL wasn't stimulating me in the evening or during the night. I'm not sure that worked, but the XL is still effective.
Hope your transition goes well.
