Facing my harshest critic!

Postby sherrie » Mon Sep 10, 2012 6:35 pm

I looked in the mirror
and what did i see?
My own two eyes
staring back at me

I'm looking out
and they're looking in
They see the person
who lies within

I open my mouth
to say something good
I can't meet their glare
but wish that I could!

The tears come
and fall like the rain
I step away
I can't face this again!

Look in your mirror
what can you see?
Mine has a bad person
staring back at me!

Continuing my resolution to reflect on past posts I found this poem that I thought must have been based on a song. I looked up the lines:

I'm looking out
and they're looking in
They see the person
who lies within

And came to a site that contained this statement:

It’s essential to be able to tell someone the whole truth about how much you’re suffering, without concern that the person will discount you, disbelieve, judge, get distracted by fear about what you are saying, or respond with boredom, irritation, or impatience.

The site recommends a professional therapist ... which I definitely recommend trying. But for me therapy was like The Invasion of the Body Snatchers ... although it might have been a moment of enlightenment also  I chose to end therapy because

like the lines:

Look in your mirror
what can you see?
Mine has a bad person
staring back at me!

no longer made sense for me. I look in the mirror and just see a person staring back at me. I find I can interact with everyone simply as people, vs when I judge and react to good or bad instead of simply trying to stay polite I end up feeling like I've been mistaken.

I finally understood the AA motto "One Day At A Time".
