CHRISTMAS EVE, KID STYLE

CHRISTMAS EVE, KID STYLE

Backward, turn backward, oh time in thy flight,
Make me a child again just for tonight.
Let me sprawl out by our bright Christmas tree
Looking for presents that Santa brought me.

Mother and Daddy were sleeping upstairs,
We'd all had our baths and had finished our prayers.
The moon shone so brightly on new fallen snow
That cold Christmas eve which was SO long ago.

I waited 'til everyone seemed fast asleep,
Then slipped from my bed to begin the long creep
Down the hall, past the bedroom where Daddy's loud snore
Covered the squeak as I crawled past his door.

Down the stairs I tread lightly, not making a sound.
I rushed to the tree, began looking around
For presents with tags that would bear just my name,
Hoping to find dolls or clothes or a game.

But then someone coughed and I jumped to my feet;
A voice whispered hoarsely, "I'm telling, you cheat."
My sister had caught me unwrapping a gift;
I knew I'd be punished and it would be swift.

My mind raced ahead, knowing not what to do,
Then I thought of a plan, right out of the blue.
"I know what you're getting," I said, "Look over there.
It's something you've wanted; it's something to wear."

She tore off the wrapping and yelled in surprise,
"It's just what I wanted; it's just the right size!"
We found all our presents and untied each bow
Then wrapped them back up so that no one would know.

A few hours later, the house came alive.
We heard Daddy shouting, "Did Santa arrive?"
But we'd had our Christmas, so with nary a peep,
We fluffed up our pillows and went back to sleep.
